How does HEIC Editor let me edit without installing anything?

Concretely, the HEIC is decoded server-side into an editable canvas so you never need the HEVC codec installed locally, and the edits you apply are composited once at export rather than at each step. The editing surface is the browser, so there is nothing to install and no licence to hold.
What can I actually change?

Crop, rotate, flip, resize, draw, add text and shapes, and apply filters and colour adjustments. Everything is applied to a working copy, so the file you uploaded is never modified in place.
Does the file format limit what the editor can do?

It does. this format is read and written by the same streaming pipeline as everything else we support. What the format can represent bounds what any editor can preserve, here or on the desktop.
Anything specific to HEIC in the editor?

Yes — HEIC decoding needs the HEVC licence stack that Windows and most browsers ship without, which is usually the real reason the file is here at all. Worth knowing before you export over your only copy.
Is anything lost when I export?

Only what the export format cannot represent. Choose a lossless output while you are still iterating and a compressed one when you are finished — exporting to a lossy format between edit sessions is what accumulates damage.
Is my file uploaded, or does editing happen locally?

Editing happens in your browser; the file goes to our workers only for the operations that genuinely need server-side processing, and it is deleted shortly afterwards.
