How do I convert ICO to PNG without losing image quality?

Does ICO to PNG conversion preserve transparency?

Transparency survives when going to PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, ICO, PSD or SVG. Converting to JPG / JPEG / JFIF flattens the alpha channel against a white background — if you need transparency, target a transparency-aware format instead of PNG.
What about EXIF metadata when converting ICO to PNG?

In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the PNG. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.
Can I batch-convert hundreds of ICO files to PNG at once?

What resolution and dimensions will my PNG file have?

Default behaviour is 1:1 — your PNG output has the same pixel dimensions as the source ICO. ICO output is the exception (it produces a multi-resolution stack: 16/32/48/64/128/256). If you need to resize as part of the conversion, use /resize/ after conversion.
Are my ICO files private during conversion?

Yes. Uploaded ICO files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted PNG are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Why is my converted PNG file bigger / smaller than I expected?

Size is decided by the two compression models, not by the converter. Remember that ICO is a container that holds several square bitmaps at once (16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 px) so Windows and browsers can pick the size they need, whereas PNG is lossless DEFLATE with a full 8-bit alpha channel and optional 16-bit depth, so it never degrades on re-save but gets large on photographic content — so a heavily-compressed ICO usually GROWS when re-encoded into a lossless PNG, and a bulky lossless ICO usually shrinks sharply going the other way. Image content matters too: photographs and flat line art compress very differently.
Can I use the converted PNG file commercially?

Yes. The conversion is a format change — copyright on the image content stays with you (or whoever held it on the source ICO). We add no watermark, no metadata stamp, and claim no licence over the output.
