Which audio format will I get from my 3GP?

MP3 by default, because nothing refuses to play it. You can choose a different target: AAC for better quality at the same bitrate, FLAC or WAV when you need lossless, OGG or Opus for open formats and low-bitrate speech.
Is the audio re-encoded or copied?

Copied when it can be. If the audio inside your 3GP is already in the target codec we pass the stream through untouched, which is instant and bit-perfect. Otherwise it is re-encoded once at a high bitrate.
What bitrate should I choose?
+
192 kbps MP3 is transparent for most listeners on most material; 320 kbps is the practical ceiling for the format. For speech and podcasts, 96-128 kbps is plenty and halves the file. Going above the source bitrate never adds quality.
Can I extract just part of the 3GP?

Convert the whole thing, then use /trim/ on the result to keep the section you want. Two quick steps beat re-running a long extraction to adjust the boundaries.
Does the 3GP keep multiple audio tracks?

If the source carries several tracks — alternate languages, commentary — the primary one is extracted by default and you can select a different one. Most audio targets hold a single track, so they cannot all be kept in one file.
Will surround sound be preserved?

It depends on the target. Multichannel audio survives into formats that support it; MP3 and most simple targets downmix to stereo, which is normally what you want for headphones and phones anyway.
What about the sample rate?

The source sample rate is preserved by default — 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz both pass through unchanged. Resampling is available but rarely useful, since it cannot recover detail that was never recorded.
Will tags and cover art carry over?

Title, artist, album and embedded artwork are copied where both the source and the target support metadata. Some very simple audio containers have no tag mechanism at all, in which case the metadata is dropped.
Why is the audio file so much smaller than the 3GP?
+
Because 3GP is the cut-down MP4 profile built for early mobile networks, usually very low resolution with AMR audio — most of the original bytes were the parts you are discarding. Keeping only the audio track routinely produces a file a small fraction of the original size, and that is expected, not a sign of quality loss.
Can I process several 3GP files at once?

Yes — upload the batch and each is converted with the same settings. This is the normal way to pull the audio out of a whole series of recordings.
Should I pick a lossless target?

Only if you are going to edit or master the audio afterwards. For listening, a good lossy encode is indistinguishable and a fraction of the size. Note that converting an already-lossy source to a lossless target does not restore anything — it just stores the same audio in a larger file.
Is my 3GP private during conversion?

Yes — uploads are processed in isolated workers and deleted within minutes. Recordings are never stored, reviewed or used for training. See /privacy/.
