BMP to PSD Conversion FAQ

How do I convert BMP to PSD without losing image quality?
+
It helps to know what each side actually is: BMP is essentially raw uncompressed RGB rows with a small header, so it is perfectly lossless and enormous — often 10-20x the size of the same image as PNG, while PSD is Photoshop native — layers, masks, adjustment layers and blend modes stay live and editable, which no flat image format can represent. Upload your BMP file and our converter applies format-aware quality optimization for PSD output — for lossless targets (PNG, TIFF, BMP, PSD) every pixel is preserved; for lossy targets (JPG, WebP, GIF) you can tune the quality factor before download.
Transparency survives when going to PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, ICO, PSD or SVG. Converting to JPG / JPEG / JFIF flattens the alpha channel against a white background — if you need transparency, target a transparency-aware format instead of PSD.
In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the PSD. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.
Several files in one job need a paid plan. Free use is one file per conversion, one conversion an hour. On a paid plan you can add several files to one job, then download each result on its own or all of them in one ZIP.
Default behaviour is 1:1 — your PSD output has the same pixel dimensions as the source BMP. ICO output is the exception (it produces a multi-resolution stack: 16/32/48/64/128/256). If you need to resize as part of the conversion, use /resize/ after conversion.
Yes. Uploaded BMP files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted PSD are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Size is decided by the two compression models, not by the converter. Remember that BMP is essentially raw uncompressed RGB rows with a small header, so it is perfectly lossless and enormous — often 10-20x the size of the same image as PNG, whereas PSD is Photoshop native — layers, masks, adjustment layers and blend modes stay live and editable, which no flat image format can represent — so a heavily-compressed BMP usually GROWS when re-encoded into a lossless PSD, and a bulky lossless BMP usually shrinks sharply going the other way. Image content matters too: photographs and flat line art compress very differently.
Yes. The conversion is a format change — copyright on the image content stays with you (or whoever held it on the source BMP). We add no watermark, no metadata stamp, and claim no licence over the output.

BMP

BMP files store images in uncompressed bitmap format, resulting in large file sizes but perfect definition.

PSD

PSD (Photoshop Document) is the native file format for Adobe Photoshop. PSD files store layered images, allowing for non-destructive editing and sustaining design elements. They are crucial for photo-definition graphic design and photo manipulation.
