BMP to GIF Conversion FAQ
How do I convert BMP to GIF without losing image quality?
+
It helps to know what each side actually is: BMP is essentially raw uncompressed RGB rows with a small header, so it is perfectly lossless and enormous — often 10-20x the size of the same image as PNG, while GIF is capped at a 256-colour palette with single-bit (on/off) transparency and no partial alpha, which is why photographs band and dither in it. Upload your BMP file and our converter applies format-aware quality optimization for GIF output — for lossless targets (PNG, TIFF, BMP, PSD) every pixel is preserved; for lossy targets (JPG, WebP, GIF) you can tune the quality factor before download.
Does BMP to GIF conversion preserve transparency?
+
Transparency survives when going to PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, ICO, PSD or SVG. Converting to JPG / JPEG / JFIF flattens the alpha channel against a white background — if you need transparency, target a transparency-aware format instead of GIF.
What about EXIF metadata when converting BMP to GIF?
+
In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the GIF. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.
Can I batch-convert hundreds of BMP files to GIF at once?
+
Several files in one job need a paid plan. Free use is one file per conversion, one conversion an hour. On a paid plan you can add several files to one job, then download each result on its own or all of them in one ZIP.
What resolution and dimensions will my GIF file have?
+
Default behaviour is 1:1 — your GIF output has the same pixel dimensions as the source BMP. ICO output is the exception (it produces a multi-resolution stack: 16/32/48/64/128/256). If you need to resize as part of the conversion, use /resize/ after conversion.
Are my BMP files private during conversion?
+
Yes. Uploaded BMP files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted GIF are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Why is my converted GIF file bigger / smaller than I expected?
+
Size is decided by the two compression models, not by the converter. Remember that BMP is essentially raw uncompressed RGB rows with a small header, so it is perfectly lossless and enormous — often 10-20x the size of the same image as PNG, whereas GIF is capped at a 256-colour palette with single-bit (on/off) transparency and no partial alpha, which is why photographs band and dither in it — so a heavily-compressed BMP usually GROWS when re-encoded into a lossless GIF, and a bulky lossless BMP usually shrinks sharply going the other way. Image content matters too: photographs and flat line art compress very differently.
Can I use the converted GIF file commercially?
+
Yes. The conversion is a format change — copyright on the image content stays with you (or whoever held it on the source BMP). We add no watermark, no metadata stamp, and claim no licence over the output.
