JPEG to GIF Conversion FAQ

How do I convert JPEG to GIF without losing image quality?
+
It helps to know what each side actually is: JPEG is the same codec as JPG under a longer extension — identical DCT pipeline, identical quantisation tables, nothing about the pixels changes with the filename, while GIF is capped at a 256-colour palette with single-bit (on/off) transparency and no partial alpha, which is why photographs band and dither in it. Upload your JPEG file and our converter applies format-aware quality optimization for GIF output — for lossless targets (PNG, TIFF, BMP, PSD) every pixel is preserved; for lossy targets (JPG, WebP, GIF) you can tune the quality factor before download.
Transparency survives when going to PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, ICO, PSD or SVG. Converting to JPG / JPEG / JFIF flattens the alpha channel against a white background — if you need transparency, target a transparency-aware format instead of GIF.
In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the GIF. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.
Several files in one job need a paid plan. Free use is one file per conversion, one conversion an hour. On a paid plan you can add several files to one job, then download each result on its own or all of them in one ZIP.
Default behaviour is 1:1 — your GIF output has the same pixel dimensions as the source JPEG. ICO output is the exception (it produces a multi-resolution stack: 16/32/48/64/128/256). If you need to resize as part of the conversion, use /resize/ after conversion.
Yes. Uploaded JPEG files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted GIF are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Size is decided by the two compression models, not by the converter. Remember that JPEG is the same codec as JPG under a longer extension — identical DCT pipeline, identical quantisation tables, nothing about the pixels changes with the filename, whereas GIF is capped at a 256-colour palette with single-bit (on/off) transparency and no partial alpha, which is why photographs band and dither in it — so a heavily-compressed JPEG usually GROWS when re-encoded into a lossless GIF, and a bulky lossless JPEG usually shrinks sharply going the other way. Image content matters too: photographs and flat line art compress very differently.
Yes. The conversion is a format change — copyright on the image content stays with you (or whoever held it on the source JPEG). We add no watermark, no metadata stamp, and claim no licence over the output.

JPEG

JPEG uses lossy compression optimized for photographs, balancing definition and file size.

GIF

GIF files manage animation and limited color palettes, perfect for user-friendly animations, memes, and icons.
