GIF to JFIF Conversion FAQ

How do I convert GIF to JFIF without losing image quality?
+
It helps to know what each side actually is: GIF is capped at a 256-colour palette with single-bit (on/off) transparency and no partial alpha, which is why photographs band and dither in it, while JFIF is a plain JPEG bitstream under the original 1992 interchange header, which is why some viewers show it as a generic image and cameras still emit it. Upload your GIF file and our converter applies format-aware quality optimization for JFIF output — for lossless targets (PNG, TIFF, BMP, PSD) every pixel is preserved; for lossy targets (JPG, WebP, GIF) you can tune the quality factor before download.
Transparency survives when going to PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, ICO, PSD or SVG. Converting to JPG / JPEG / JFIF flattens the alpha channel against a white background — if you need transparency, target a transparency-aware format instead of JFIF.
In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the JFIF. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.
Several files in one job need a paid plan. Free use is one file per conversion, one conversion an hour. On a paid plan you can add several files to one job, then download each result on its own or all of them in one ZIP.
Default behaviour is 1:1 — your JFIF output has the same pixel dimensions as the source GIF. ICO output is the exception (it produces a multi-resolution stack: 16/32/48/64/128/256). If you need to resize as part of the conversion, use /resize/ after conversion.
Yes. Uploaded GIF files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted JFIF are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Size is decided by the two compression models, not by the converter. Remember that GIF is capped at a 256-colour palette with single-bit (on/off) transparency and no partial alpha, which is why photographs band and dither in it, whereas JFIF is a plain JPEG bitstream under the original 1992 interchange header, which is why some viewers show it as a generic image and cameras still emit it — so a heavily-compressed GIF usually GROWS when re-encoded into a lossless JFIF, and a bulky lossless GIF usually shrinks sharply going the other way. Image content matters too: photographs and flat line art compress very differently.
Yes. The conversion is a format change — copyright on the image content stays with you (or whoever held it on the source GIF). We add no watermark, no metadata stamp, and claim no licence over the output.

GIF

GIF files manage animation and limited color palettes, perfect for user-friendly animations, memes, and icons.

JFIF

JFIF is the interchange wrapper around baseline JPEG data, so a JFIF file is a JPEG under a different extension.
