Why convert an animated WebP into MOV video?

Size and smoothness. Because WebP carries both a lossy VP8 mode and a lossless mode plus full alpha, typically landing 25-35% under a JPG of matching visual quality, an animation stored that way is far larger and choppier than the same motion encoded as video. Converting to MOV routinely cuts the file by 80-95% while allowing a higher frame rate.
Will the animation loop like the WebP did?

Looping is a player behaviour rather than a stored property once you are in video, so set the loop attribute on your video element or enable loop in the player. Social platforms loop short clips automatically.
What happens to the frame rate?

Frame timing is read from the source and reproduced as closely as the target allows. Animations with irregular per-frame delays are normalised to a constant frame rate, which usually looks smoother than the original.
Does transparency survive?

Generally no. Most video codecs have no alpha channel, so transparent regions are composited onto a solid background — white by default, configurable. If you need transparency in motion, keep the source format or target a codec that supports alpha.
Will the colours change?

They can improve. A palette-limited source is restricted to 256 colours, and video codecs are full-colour, so banding in the source stays but no new banding is introduced. Where MOV is QuickTime, Apple-native, and the usual home for ProRes and alpha-channel video that MP4 cannot carry, the conversion generally makes gradients look better, not worse.
Can I convert a series of still images into a video?

Yes — upload them in order and set a duration per frame to build a slideshow or timelapse. Name the files so they sort correctly; filename order determines frame order.
Is there audio in the output?

No — the source has no sound, so the MOV is silent. Some platforms prefer a video to have an audio track; add a silent or music track afterwards if a specific platform complains.
What resolution will the MOV be?

The source dimensions by default. Note that some codecs require even-numbered dimensions, so an odd-sized source is padded or cropped by a single pixel — harmless, but it explains an unexpected off-by-one in the output size.
Which target should I choose for social media?

MP4 with H.264 is accepted everywhere and is the right default. WebM is smaller and ideal for self-hosted web embedding but is rejected by several social platforms.
Can I trim or crop during the conversion?

Not in the same pass — convert first, then use /video-trim/ on the result. Doing it in two steps is faster than re-encoding the whole clip just to change its boundaries.
Can I batch-convert many animations?

Yes — each becomes its own MOV with the same encode settings. This is how people migrate a folder of legacy animations to modern video in one pass.
Is my file private during conversion?
