What sizes does the ICO file contain?

By default we bundle 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixel squares into one file, because ICO is a container that holds several square bitmaps at once (16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 px) so Windows and browsers can pick the size they need. Windows picks 16 or 32 for the taskbar, browsers pick 16 or 32 for the tab, and installers use 256 — one file covers all of them.

What should my source JPEG look like?

Square, at least 256x256, with generous padding and heavy simplification. A favicon is displayed at 16 pixels; anything with fine detail or small text turns to mush at that size. Design the mark, not the logo lockup.

Does JPEG to ICO keep transparency?

Yes for sources that have it — the alpha channel is preserved so the icon sits cleanly on any toolbar or tab colour. Source formats with no alpha (JPG, JPEG, JFIF) has an opaque rectangle for a background, and it will look like one.

My JPEG is not square — what happens?

It is padded to a square rather than stretched, so nothing is distorted. Because the padding is transparent (or white for formats without alpha), cropping the JPEG to a square yourself before converting almost always looks better.

Where do I put the ICO file on my website?

Serve it at /favicon.ico at the site root — every browser requests that path automatically with no HTML at all. You can additionally declare it with a link rel="icon" tag if you want a non-standard path.

Why does my favicon still not show up?

Nearly always caching. Browsers cache favicons hard and separately from normal page assets. Force-reload, try a private window, or append a query string to the declared URL. Give a live site a day before concluding the ICO is wrong.

Do I need the ICO format at all, or is a PNG enough?

Modern browsers happily use a PNG favicon. ICO is still worth generating because it packs several resolutions in one file, and Windows shortcuts, older Internet Explorer and some desktop tooling accept nothing else.

Can I make a macOS or iOS icon from my JPEG?

For Apple touch icons, export a plain 180x180 PNG rather than ICO — iOS ignores ICO entirely. Use this converter for the Windows and browser-tab case, and a straight JPEG-to-PNG resize for Apple.

Does the ICO lose quality compared to the JPEG?

Each embedded size is a fresh downscale from your original JPEG using a high-quality filter, so the 256px entry is essentially your source. The small entries lose detail because they are small, not because of the format.

Can I convert several JPEG files into icons at once?

Yes — each one becomes its own multi-resolution ICO. This is the fast way to produce a set of app or bookmark icons from a folder of exported artwork.

Will the ICO work as a Windows application icon?

Yes — the multi-size bundle is exactly the shape Windows expects for an executable or shortcut, and Explorer will select the right entry per view mode. Attach it in your build tooling or via the shortcut properties dialog.
